Progress Over Panic: How Mega Techs Opened the Store on Time

It was supposed to be an easy two-day installation; I was assisting with a new clothing store. “Chase” (we’ll call him) was set to fly in the night before, inventory everything on the pallet, and then show me and my two guys how the speakers were to be installed.

The first sign of trouble hit when one of my helpers called out sick that morning. Okay we’ve dealt with worse.

When my crew of +1 rolled up, there was no sign of “Chase,” no equipment, and no documentation. Okay, we’ve dealt with worse.

I reached out to the case owner at Mega; he was as confused as we were. He gave us the customer’s number. We called, no response. Okay, we’ve dealt with worse.

I asked around for the construction super. He said he had our pallets. Progress. He brought us to the back door, and I knew even without directions or documentation we could break down the pallet and inventory everything. Progress. Next, we opened all the boxes and inventoried everything. Progress.

After finishing the inventory, it was obvious that the square 4-way tweeters and 6-inch woofers belonged in the wall enclosures, and we had shims to get them flush, so we started grinding away. Progress.

Day two, the customer came in later than he wanted and had no idea where “Chase” was. I assured him it was okay; we’ve dealt with worse. We’d make progress with what we had.

We ended up facing three more days of setbacks, then we started making steady progress, including working through the weekend to get the store open on schedule with sound.

In the end, the customer was happy, the clothing store was happy, the Mega PM was happy, my crew was happy, and “Chase” was found. Because we rolled with every issue in our path, I’ll be taking “Chase’s” role for the next clothing store install in Scottsdale which will free “Chase”. Up for other jobs in other states.

That’s what happens when you roll with the punches and keep making progress.

In this story, the Mega Elite Tech:

  • Owns the outcome he’s given
  • Makes decisive calls when plans go sideways
  • Works weekends to hit immovable deadlines
  • Rallies under pressure and delivers on time
