The Two-Inch Catch That Prevented a Construction Disaster

This month, MegaServices celebrates 18 years in business. In the years since 2007, we’ve encountered numerous situations in the field that have presented opportunities for us to develop our company’s values and grow, while also exceeding customer expectations. Over the next few posts, we’re going to share some of those stories.

This past summer, I had the privilege of spending a couple of days with one of our top technicians. It was an experience!  You haven’t truly lived until you’ve watched someone wield a tape measure like it’s a sacred artifact.

During our time on-site, I witnessed a moment that could’ve come from a construction-themed soap opera.

Thanks to the tech and his microscopic attention to detail, a two-inch mistake was caught early—a mistake that could’ve cost the contractor a lot of man-hours and the kind of money that makes accountants cry.

Now, to a regular person, two inches is barely enough space to even worry about.  But in construction?  Well, that is a different story!

Picture 50 rooms, all installed with code entrance boxes at the wrong height. That’s not just an oops!   That is Money, Money to redo!  It was a code violation that could have prevented the building from opening on time!  Door frames would have had to be replaced.  Lots of man-hours to do so, not to mention buying things again that had been bought before!

Luckily, William checked the height of two boxes already installed—and boom! He saw the problem in the making!

The General Contractor’s reaction?  Honestly, if hugs were allowed in professional settings, William would’ve been carried off like a champion quarterback. Safe to say, our tech didn’t just save the day—he saved sanity, schedules, and more zeroes than a bad math quiz.
